Are Bull Terriers Stubborn

Are bull terriers stubborn? To ask such a question would be like asking if the Earth is round, or if the sun is bright. This breed of dog has a strong personality and that is what makes it rather unique. A stubborn bull terrier is also a smart bull terrier. It knows its mind. If it has not been trained firmly and consistently, it is likely to take orders as mere suggestions.

Why Is A Bull Terrier Stubborn?

It is quite natural for a Bull Terrier to be stubborn. One has to keep in mind that this dog is a cross between Bulldogs and English White Terriers. It has the bulk and strength of a Bulldog and the indomitable spirit of a Terrier. They were originally bred for the cruel and bloody sport of dog fighting.

Only the most intelligent and strongest of dogs survived and were bred. This makes the Bull Terrier one of the smartest and most stubborn dogs you will find. It is all in the genes.

Caring For A Stubborn Bull Terrier

All dogs need to be trained to follow basic orders and to be house-trained. Bull Terriers need an owner who has the time and patience to offer consistent and kind training. If you do not have much time to spend with your pet, the Bull Terrier is not the right choice for you.

Training A Bull Terrier

There are four essential things that Bull Terriers require. The first and foremost of this is early socialization with other animals. Since they are naturally friendly with people and aggressive with other animals, Bull Terriers must learn to socialize from an early age.

Are Bull Terriers Stubborn

They require firm but kind training. A stubborn Bull Terrier responds well to positive reinforcement. So it is far more effective to reward the dog with a treat or praise for good behavior than with punishment for unacceptable behavior. Their training period is often longer than that for other dogs as it must be established that the pet parent is a strong and confident leader.

Bull Terriers are both, independent as well as intelligent. They are naturally curious and highly motivated. If they want to do something, they will find a way to do it. They need a daily exercise regime that includes vigorous playtime as well as mental stimulation. Again, this breed is not a good choice for someone who cannot give the dog the time and attention it needs.

Bull Terriers thrive in families with older children who can play with them and keep up with them. They are friendly and loyal and enjoy human company. If a Bull Terrier is left alone for long periods regularly it may turn destructive. You are likely to find furniture and other things chewed on.

The Bull Terrier is a rare breed of dog. It has one of the strongest personalities you will see in a canine. It must know and accept the pet owner to be the pack leader, and there can be no ambiguity about this. If you are willing to spend time with your dog, training it, reinforcing good behavior, and spending time with it, Bull Terriers stubborn as they may be, will enrich your life in innumerable ways.
