Austrian Dog Breeds

People all over the world have bred dogs to do a variety of different tasks, such as herding, guarding, hunting, and even just laying on someone’s lap! As a result, there are hundreds of breeds that hail from countless different countries. Austria has created several unique canines. So here are the Austrian dog breeds and what you’ll want to know about them!

Alpine Dachsbracke

The Alpine Dachsbracke is unsurprisingly related to the extremely popular Dachshund. Breeders combined Dachshunds with larger dog breeds, which resulted in a breed with more useful hunting traits. While the Alpine Dachsbracke was initially used to hunt game such as foxes, deer, boars, and hares, they’re adopted as friendly and loving companions today.

The Alpine Dachsbracke needs plenty of exercise. They can be a bit difficult to train due to their stubborn nature, but with time and patience, they can be just as friendly and affectionate as any other dog breed.

Austrian Black and Tan Hound

This Austrian hunting dog breed has a keen sense of smell and a hard-working temperament. However, the Austrian Black and Tan hound needs plenty of wide-open spaces to run and chase to its heart’s content. Unfortunately, this is not a dog for city-dwellers. Ideally, the Austrian Black and Tan Hound will find a home in a rural area with plenty of room to stretch its legs.

Styrian Coarse-Haired Hound

The Styrian Coarse-Haired Hound is another one of the dog breeds from Austria that was primarily bred for hunting. This is a medium-sized dog with a high prey drive that, like the Austrian Black and Tan Hound, needs lots of exercise and wide, open space.

As long as their exercise needs are being met, however, they can make a devoted family dog, as well. Keep in mind that this is a particularly loud dog breed that is naturally wary around strangers.

Tyrolean Hound

The last of the Austrian dog breeds is the Tyrolean Hound, who is just as dedicated, hardworking, and fearless as the other dogs on this list. These dogs are natural scent hounds that were bred for hunting in the 1800s. This is an affectionate dog with a bit of an independent streak. This is a highly intelligent breed that is usually easy to train but can be willful and stubborn at times.
