Dogs’ coats can be many different colors; however black and white coats are always one of the most popular. The contrast created by these two opposite colors can really make for an eye-catching canine. So here are some of the top black and white dog breeds you’ll want to consider.
Portuguese Water Dog
The Portuguese Water Dog was originally used to herd fish into nets in addition to retrieving broken nets and tackle for the fisherman in its homeland of Portugal. While this breed is considered to be hypoallergenic and it does not shed it is considered to be a high-maintenance dog.
That’s because its curly coat requires combing and brushing daily. That being said, this highly intelligent medium-sized dog makes an excellent family pet that of course has a natural love for the water.
Boston Terrier
This little black and white dog is an American creation with a playful character. And its distinct markings which look similar to a tuxedo give it quite a dapper appearance. In addition to black and white, the Boston Terrier also comes in seal or brindle with white markings.
Although it may be reserved with strangers this a devoted family dog that becomes very attached to its owners. And most owners agree that while it is small this is a breed that thinks it’s much larger than it really is.
Tibetan Terrier
Although this dog does come from Tibet it’s actually not a terrier at all. The Tibetan Terrier got the “Terrier,” in its name when it was introduced outside of its home country of Tibet because it looked similar in size and appearance to the terriers that most people were familiar with at the time.
And while it is one of the few black and white longhaired dog breeds it’s not strictly black and white, in fact, it comes in just about all coat colors (except chocolate and liver). The breed’s long, thick, coat does need regular care to prevent tangles unless of course, you decide to have it trimmed.
Dalmatian
This black and white spotted dog breed is easily one of the most recognizable dogs on the planet. The Dalmatian is an elegant and athletic canine that makes a great running partner and gets along well with horses. In the past, it was used as a carriage dog that could not only keep up to speed with the horse-drawn carriages but also protect the horses and passengers. And of course, it also became a popular firehouse mascot.
Old English Sheepdog
Looks can be deceiving, and many people are surprised to learn that under the coat of this black and white fluffy dog is a muscular and stocky body. The Old English Sheepdog is a sheep herding dog that is known for its clownish behavior and gentleness with children.
It also makes an excellent watchdog that won’t hesitate to bark when there is someone or something suspicious about. All Old English Sheepdogs are actually born with a black and white coat. However, not all of them stay that way. After their first shed, the black in the coat of many dogs starts to change to grey or silver in color.
Newfoundland
This giant breed is typically seen with a black coat. Its black color and massive proportions actually make it look quite like a big black bear. Another option is a Newfoundland with a black and white coat these are referred to as Landseer Newfoundlands. The ideal Landseer Newfoundland should have a black head, along with a separate black saddle, and a black rump that leads to a white tail.
Karelian Bear Dog
The Karelian Bear Dog is a black and white hunting dog breed from Finland. And like its name suggests it’s used to hunt bear but it can also hunt other big game such as elk, moose, and wild boar. Because it is a hunting dog that was created to confront large and dangerous animals it is a very confident canine with a highly independent personality. And is therefore typically only recommended for experienced owners.
Siberian Husky
A Siberian native with wolf-like looks, the Siberian Husky is famous for its ability as a sled dog. But it’s also a popular companion breed. While a black and white husky can be stunning in appearance and is a favorite among many husky fans, this breed comes in many other colors. Its coat can range from black all the way to pure white. Most Siberian Huskies also have white markings on their legs and chests and head.
American Staffordshire Terrier
The American Staffordshire Terrier is a muscular and amazingly athletic dog. This stocky breed is gentle with kids and is considered to be among the most loyal and courageous breeds on the planet. The Amstaff comes in many coat colors and patterns and makes an excellent pet for those with experience who are able to provide the proper training and socialization.
Great Dane
Harlequin Great Danes have a white coat with ragged and irregular patches of black. And with one look at a harlequin-coated Dane, it’s easy to see why these giant dogs are often described as cow-like in appearance. However the harlequin coat pattern is not the only option for those who would like a black and white Great Dane. The mantle coat pattern is also black and white and looks similar to the tuxedo-like coat of a Boston Terrier.
Border Collie
Like the Old English Sheepdog, the Border Collie is one of the black and white sheepdog breeds. And it is a world-class sheepdog at that. Because it was created to work and think for itself, it is not only a dog that is incredibly intelligent but that also has an enormous amount of energy. Therefore it does best with highly active owners or when it has a job to do.
When it’s herding sheep or other animals, the Border Collie uses a stalking and staring technique that mimics predatory behavior in order to keep the animals under control.
Akita
The Akita is a famously loyal Japanese breed. This a big, powerful, and courageous dog that was created to hunt large game such as bears. Because it can be dominant with other dogs and animals this is a breed that requires an experienced owner who can be a strong leader. An interesting fact about the Akita is that it has webbed feet. And unlike other dogs, this isn’t to help them in the water but instead in the snow.
English Springer Spaniel
Hunters who are looking for a handsome black and white bird dog breed that also happens to make a fabulous family dog or companion will have to look no further than the English Springer Spaniel. They are more robust than other spaniels, learn fast, and are eager to please.
In the field, English Springer Spaniels work as versatile hunters that can both flush and retrieve game birds. Keep in mind that this lively breed will need plenty of exercise daily.
French Bulldog
The lovable little French Bulldog is an ideal canine for those who want a pet that doesn’t need much exercise and is perfectly suited for life in a smaller home or apartment. Like most bulldog breeds they can be a bit stubborn though. The Frenchie comes in many colors.
And Black and white French Bulldogs are actually often confused for another commonly black and white dog breed: the Boston Terrier. While these breeds do have similar features the Frenchie however has a stockier build with rounded, bat-like ears. The Boston Terrier is leggier with pointed ears and markings that look like a tuxedo.
Bull Terrier
The Bull Terrier is not a breed for everyone. Not only do they have a totally unique look, to say the least, but owning one also requires patience and experience. However, these canine clowns can easily steal your heart. There are twenty-two accepted color combinations of this breed, with one of the most sought after being a white Bull Terrier with a black spot or patch around one eye.
Chihuahua
These tiny toy dogs were developed in Mexico to be companions and they fulfill that role so well that they are popular pets around the world. And luckily for Chihuahua fans, there are a lot of options to choose from. Chihuahuas come in all coat patterns and colors including black and white. They also come in two coat types as well, smooth and long.
Landseer
Although it is related to the Canadian Newfoundland (which also has a black and white coat type known as a Landseer Newfoundland) this is a separate breed. The Landseer was developed in Germany and Switzerland. These big black and white dogs are more active, have longer legs, and drool less than their Canadian cousins. This breed is also called the Landseer European Continental Type or Landseer ECT for short.
Japanese Chin
For those looking for a small black and white dog breed that needs minimal exercise and can easily live in an apartment, the Japanese Chin might be the perfect pooch. This affectionate Japanese dog has a long and silky coat which gives the appearance of having a mane around its neck and shoulders. It is known for being an exceptionally intelligent breed that is a bit too smart for its own good.
