Bull Terriers Are Ugly

Some people think that Bull Terriers are ugly, and others think that their egg-shaped head makes them look cute. Whatever your opinion of how Bull Terriers look, an indisputable fact is that the smart Bull Terrier is unique and quite distinct.

Why Are Bull Terriers So Ugly?

To understand why Bull Terriers look the way they do, one would need to trace their history. This breed was created by breeding Bulldogs with English White Terriers. As breeders were looking to create a dog for the dog fighting ring, they crossbred it with Spanish Pointers. This made the Bull Terriers bigger.

If one were to look at pictures of a Bull Terrier a century ago, it looked quite different from how it does today. So to answer the question, ‘Why are Bull Terriers so Ugly?’, it is because breeders made them that way.

Understanding Ugly

We live in a world where appearances are very important. Often superficial looks are given more value than character and personality. The word ugly has its etymological roots in the Scandinavian word ‘uglike’, which means ‘frightful or dreadful’. Over time the word came to describe ‘very unpleasant in appearance’.

Interestingly, most people cannot agree upon what is ugly, or for that matter what can be termed beautiful. In other words, beauty lies in the eye of the beholder. It is a matter of perspective. To some Bull Terriers are ugly, and to some they are adorable.

What Makes The Bull Terrier Unique?

Bull Terriers are smart, loving, and friendly. They are intelligent, and need a vigorous physical exercise routine and also mental stimulation. As Bull Terriers are both smart and stubborn, they are not easy to train and usually take longer to train than other breeds.

It is important that they are trained with patience and confidence. If they sense any hesitation in leadership, they will make up their own rules. This is a clear indicator of how smart and intuitive the Bull Terrier is. If you are a timid person or you are getting a pet for the first time, then a Bull Terrier may not be the obvious choice.

They make a great addition to families with older children, who can match the Bull Terrier in terms of physical energy as well as mischief. If Bull Terriers are left alone for long periods they become bored and tend to chew on anything they can get their great big jaws on.

They are smart, loyal, and affectionate. Pet owners say that they are busy dogs and are constantly up to something or the other. If you choose to bring a Bull Terrier home, it will make your life interesting and fun, and there will never be a dull moment.
