The Ca De Bou is a Spanish dog breed that was once used for bloody sports like dog fighting and bull-baiting. Today, however, it is a fearless watchdog and guardian. Read on to find out more amazing Ca De Bou facts and information!
The Ca De Bou Was Once Used for Bull-Baiting
Originally, the Ca De Bou was bred as a fierce fighter against other dogs, and was even used in bull-baiting! Thankfully, that cruel practice was eventually outlawed, and the Ca De Bou no longer had to worry about being killed for sport. About 50 years later, dog fighting was similarly banned, and the Ca De Bou was used for different reasons.
It Became an Important Guard Dog
The Ca De Bou Bulldog (also known as the Perro de Presa Mallorquin, Majorcan Bulldog, or Majorcan Mastiff) found a far more important job after dog fighting and bull-baiting were banned. Like other bulldog breeds, the Ca De Bou was renowned for its strength and fearlessness, and was used to guard the ports of Spain against pirates and robbers. Today, it is still highly respected as an amazing guard dog!
They’re Surprisingly Gentle With Children
One of the coolest fun facts about Ca De Bou dogs is that they’re surprisingly gentle with children. Many people assume that this domineering dog would be highly aggressive towards kids, but they are actually very good at playing with children in their family. They are also very protective of children, which many parents find comforting.
They Need Very Firm Training
The Ca De Bou is a challenging dog, as they have a tendency to become dominant and overbearing. These dogs need an owner who can show them who is in charge- otherwise, they are easily provoked, and see any sign of weakness as a challenge. The Ca De Bou is not a dog for first-time owners!
They Are Highly Protective
The Ca De Bou temperament is that of the ideal guard dog. While very wary and even aggressive towards strangers, they are highly protective of their family members. Although they can come across as independent and even aloof at times, they always put their family members first.
The Ca De Bou Nearly Went Extinct
One of the most interesting Ca De Bou history facts is that a few dedicated breeders brought this breed back from the brink of extinction! While some Ca De Bou dogs found work as guard dogs, not all Ca De Bous were so lucky.
After dog fighting and bull-baiting were outlawed, the breed became far less popular, and most people stopped breeding them. Thankfully, they were brought back in dog shows, and while they are still rare today, they are no longer in danger of going extinct.
They’re Incredibly Wary
Another trait about the Ca De Bou which makes them a wonderful watchdog is that they’re naturally wary of any strange humans, dogs, or other animals. While this does mean they need a lot of early socialization and don’t do well in dog parks, it does make them the perfect guardians of any family!
The Ca De Bou Is Becoming Increasingly Popular
After the Ca De Bou nearly went extinct when dogfighting and bull-baiting were outlawed, it took quite a bit of effort to bring it back. Still, this breed has remained quite rare and difficult to find for decades. Thankfully, the breed’s attractive appearance and amazing skill at guarding mean that it is becoming increasingly popular. Soon, it’s expected the breed will become more plentiful.
They Need A Lot of Exercise
The Ca De Bou is a highly active dog who requires a lot of exercise. This dominant breed is prone to aggression, which can be exacerbated by improper exercise. These dogs don’t do well simply cooped up in a house. You’ll need to take a Ca De Bou out for at least thirty to sixty minutes of exercise every day. Furthermore, a large, fenced-in backyard is a must for these athletic dogs!
They’re Becoming Increasingly Gentler
One of the little-known Ca De Bou facts is that their temperament is gradually shifting. Over time, the Ca De Bou has become less fierce as it once was, when it was used to fight other dogs. Now that it is more popular as a show dog, breeders show more preference towards dogs with a gentler demeanor.
