The Cesky Terrier, also known sometimes as the Bohemian Terrier or Czech Terrier, is a lively dog breed with a penchant for playfulness. These dogs can be wary with strangers, but are incredibly affectionate to their family members. Read on to find out more amazing Cesky Terrier facts and information!
The Cesky Terrier Was Created By One Person
The Cesky Terrier was developed by a Czechoslovakian man named Frantisek Horak. He worked as both a geneticist and breeder and had a history of hunting. As a result, he was interested in creating a new terrier breed with a distinctive personality and unique hunting abilities.
He crossed Scottish Terriers with Sealyham Terriers and introduced both the Wirehaired Dachshund and Dandie Dinmont Terrier into the breed, as well. The result was the lively yet gentle Cesky Terrier.
They’re Versatile Hunters
Like a true terrier, the Cesky Terrier is famous for its ability to catch rats, but like other dogs with short legs, it’s especially good at chasing prey underground. While these terriers make great solitary hunters when searching for smaller prey, they can also hunt in larger packs to bring down big game.
The Cesky Terrier Makes An Excellent Companion For Children
Another fun fact about Cesky Terriers is that they are amazing with children. These dogs are gentle yet very lively, and they are always looking for a playmate. Their sensitive nature also makes them great friends for children, and these loyal companions will quickly turn into any child’s best friend. However, due to their small size, it’s important to teach any children in the household to play gently, so as to avoid any injuries.
They’re Incredibly Playful
The Cesky Terrier doesn’t have particularly high exercise needs, but they are extremely playful dogs. They do best in a household that has children who can keep it occupied, or adult owners who don’t mind spending a large portion of the day playing with this lively breed.
The Cesky Terrier’s Coat Color Changes Over Time
The Cesky Terrier is known for its gray coat, which ranges in a variety of hues. Surprisingly, however, these dogs aren’t born gray. As puppies, their coat is actually black or black and tan. Over time, the color gradually fades into the proper gray color, although some Cesky Terriers may have white or yellow markings. It can take three years or longer for their coat to turn into its proper gray.
They’re Very Different From Other Terriers
One of the most interesting facts about Cesky Terriers is that they have distinct personalities. Most terriers are known for being feisty and stubborn, but the Cesky Terrier is quite different. These dogs are eager to please and train surprisingly well, despite their terrier blood. While they are as playful and lively as any terrier, they have a gentle and sensitive side.
The Cesky Terrier Is A Rare Breed
Sadly, this Czech breed is very difficult to find, particularly outside of Europe. In fact, there are only about 600 of these dogs living in America! Finding a breeder who has Cesky Terriers is no easy task, but if you’re determined, it’s well worth the extra work and money to bring one of these gentle dogs into your home.
They Can Live Just About Anywhere!
The Cesky Terrier is a versatile breed, and they are well suited to living in all sorts of different situations. These adaptable dogs have relatively low exercise requirements, so they don’t necessarily need a large backyard to run around in. In fact, many Cesky Terriers are perfectly happy to live in an apartment.
The Cesky Terrier Makes A Good Watchdog
The Czech Terrier may be highly affectionate towards its family members, but it has a natural wariness towards strangers. While this wariness can be lessened by plenty of early socialization with a variety of people, it can also come in handy. While this dog is not particularly yappy, they aren’t afraid to let you know that a stranger is nearby, making this breed a wonderful watchdog.
They Make A Great First Dog
One of the coolest Cesky Terrier facts is that they make a wonderful first dog. These gentle, eager-to-please dogs are perfect for novice owners because you don’t have to worry about an impossibly stubborn streak or super high exercise requirements. Overall, the Cesky Terrier can fit right into just about any home!
