Czech Dog Breeds

The Czech Republic is a country in Central Europe. It has an interesting history and has been an independent state since Czechoslovakia dissolved in 1993 and split into two separate countries: the Czech Republic and Slovakia. And it has created some amazing canines. The following are Czech dog breeds and what you’ll want to know about them.

Prague Ratter

At first glance, many people mistake the Prague Ratter for a Chihuahua or a Miniature Pinscher. This small Czech dog breed is actually considered to be the smallest breed in the world (when ranked by height and not weight).

It is an active and energetic little dog and because of its speed, tiny size, and fantastic sense of smell was originally used to rid homes of rats and vermin. Because of its past, the Prague Ratter does have a high prey drive and will chase small animals. Unlike many other toy dog breeds that tend to quiet “yappy,” this one is known for being quiet.

Bohemian Wire-Haired Pointing Griffon

Also known as the Cesky Fousek, this is a medium-sized canine with a noble-looking appearance. It has a long and narrow head, a bearded chin, and a rough wiry coat.

The breed was almost wiped out after the First World War, however luckily with careful breeding it was brought back and is now once again one of the most popular Czech hunting dog breeds. It is a passionate and versatile hunter that can work in the woods, water, or fields.

Czechoslovakian Wolfdog

In the Czech Republic, this primitive breed is known as the Ceskoslovensky Vlcak, but it’s also called the Czechoslovakian Wolfdog, or simply the Czech Wolfdog for short. It was created by the military in the 1950s to work as a border patrol dog when the country was formerly known as Czechoslovakia.

And as its name suggests, it is part wolf. The breed was originally developed by crossing a Carpathian wolf and a German Shepherd. The final result of the breeding program is a fearless canine that has a top-notch sense of smell, endurance, and hearing. This is also considered to be a Slovakian breed as well where it is known as the Ceskoslovensky Vlciak.

Cesky Terrier

The Cesky terrier is a very rare breed that has short legs and is longer than it is tall. It has a dense beard and eyebrows. These pack-hunting terriers were developed to hunt game both above and below ground. They were created by crossing the Scottish Terrier and the Sealyham Terrier. The Cesky Terrier is easy to train and well-balanced. It is also known as the Czech Terrier and Bohemian Terrier

Bohemian Shepherd

The Bohemian Shepherd is a medium-sized sheepdog. It has distinct short and erect triangular-shaped ears and a long coat that is always black and tan in color. This Czech Republic dog breed was once used to patrol the border and protect against German expansion.

It is a lively and versatile working breed and loving family companion. The Bohemian Shepherd is a naturally alert and fearless guard dog that can be tenacious in the face of danger.

Bohemian Spotted Dog

Unlike other Czech dog breeds (and virtually all other breeds for that matter) the Bohemian Spotted Dog, also known as the Czech Spotted Dog, was created to be a laboratory dog for medical testing and research. Luckily many of the same traits that made it ideal for the lab also make it a fantastic companion and family pet.

The breed is outgoing, very friendly, and also gentle with not just people but other dogs too. It also has an attractive appearance and makes an excellent watchdog although it’s way too friendly to be a guard dog.
