Heat, thirst, and hunger are the three things that can cause just about any dog to drool. Yet there are certain breeds that slobber much more than others. So before you decide on what type of canine you’d like to purchase, you’ll want to check out the following list of dog breeds that drool most.
French Bulldog
The French Bulldog is a low-energy breed, that doesn’t bark much. These traits make it an ideal apartment dog. It’s, therefore, no surprise that according to the UKC it ranks as one of the most popular dogs for city dwellers. Because of its thick hanging lips and underbite, it’s common for the Frenchie to drool after eating and drinking, among other activities.
Boxer
The Boxer is considered to be a dog breed that drools a moderate amount. That being said some Boxers drool less and some drool much more. How much an individual Boxer dog drools is influenced by both the shape of its mouth and face. For example Boxers with lips that curve inward tend to drool less than those with lips that curve out. That’s because inward-curving lips catch much of the drool, which the dog then swallows.
Saint Bernard
While its size may be intimidating, the Saint Bernard is actually a gentle and easy-going dog. Because of its desire to please its owner, this giant-sized pooch is typically easy to train. The breed’s hanging jowls mean this extra-large canine is also a big-time drooler. The Saint Bernard comes in two coat types: long-haired and short-haired.
Great Dane
While the “Dane,” in its name suggests it comes from Denmark, this breed was actually developed in Germany. It is a canine of enormous proportions and is one of the tallest breeds in the world. The Great Dane is also considered a “velcro dog,” because it loves to stick close to its owners at all times. Because the Dane doesn’t realize its size, this usually means you’ll end up with a giant drooling lap dog.
Dogue De Bordeaux
The Dogue De Bordeaux is also known as the French Mastiff. It is one of the large dog breeds that drool and it does so excessively. Because of its size, incredible power, and tendency to be stubborn, the Dogue De Bordeaux is a canine that needs an experienced owner. While gentle with the family, this is a highly protective breed that makes a superb guard dog.
English Mastiff
Calm and affectionate best describe the personality of the English Mastiff. It is a huge dog that is known for its loyalty and natural guarding ability. Drooling and snoring are both things you can expect when owning one of these giants. As with other dogs of this size and strength, owners need to be both responsible and experienced.
Neapolitan Mastiff
The Neapolitan Mastiff is a massive dog that is covered in wrinkles and looks as if it just stepped out of ancient times and into the present. Its unique appearance is believed to help make this guardian look as imposing as possible to thieves.
While it is sweet-tempered with friends and family this is a canine to be taken seriously. The Neapolitan Mastiff is one of the dog breeds that drool the most, so if you can’t deal with constant slobber this is definitely not the dog for you.
Bull Mastiff
Created from crossing Bulldogs and English Mastiffs, the Bull Mastiff was used to aid gamekeepers in catching poachers. With ancestors like these, it’s no surprise that the Bull Mastiff itself drools heavily. It is also a natural guard dog that instinctually knows when to defend its family, which it will do with amazing tenacity.
Bloodhound
The Bloodhound is a dog with an outstanding nose, and it is particularly proficient at tracking people. In fact, its nose is so good that the Bloodhound has been used to create many other hound dog breeds. While it is stubborn when following a scent trail, and will follow it no matter how far, at home it is an easygoing canine. When considering one, it’s important to remember that this is a large dog that drools and sheds heavily.
Chinese Shar-Pei
The Chinese Shar-Pei is covered in wrinkles. These served to help protect it from damage when it was used for dog fighting in the past. The breed also has a unique-looking tongue that is blue-black in color.
While this is a loyal and calm canine it is not ideal for a first-time dog owner. It can be stubborn and dominant with other animals. And in addition to the fact that the Chinese Shar-Pei drools extra care must also be taken to keep its skin folds clean to prevent skin infections.
Newfoundland
This is a dog with a famously sweet temperament. The Newfoundland is an extra-large breed that is extremely friendly and patient with children. It is famous for its natural instinct to save swimmers who are in trouble of drowning. In the past, the Newfoundland’s strength and swimming ability were also used on ships to help tow them into shore. It is a dog that drools a lot, especially after drinking and eating.
English Bulldog
In addition to snoring, frequently passing gas, and just plain being lazy, the Bulldog is also one of the dog breeds that drool. So why would you want one? Well because this wrinkly dog is totally adorable. It also has a calm and gentle disposition and is great with young children. Despite all the slobber, life with an English Bulldog is always guaranteed to be amusing.
