In humans, underbites are typically treated by dentists, but in certain dog breeds, it’s actually considered desirable. That’s because dogs with an underbite often end up looking extremely cute because of it! So here are some of the most common dog breeds with underbites and what you’ll want to know about these charming canines.
Bulldog
The Bulldog, also known as the English Bulldog, is a medium-sized dog with a grumpy expression. A Bulldog with an underbite can be particularly adorable! Even though they may look upset, the Bulldog is actually an incredibly affectionate breed, and they are particularly good with children.
These dogs only require moderate exercise and are adaptable enough to live in either cities or rural areas. While their smushed faces are adorable, it’s important to keep in mind that it can result in breathing difficulties.
Chihuahua
Chihuahuas are a classic example of a little dog breed with a big personality. They have tiny bodies with large heads and distinctively big eyes. Some Chihuahuas can also have underbites, causing the teeth of their lower jaw to stick out over their upper lip.
Chihuahuas can be feisty, but with proper training and socialization at an early age, they can make wonderful and affectionate companions. This is an excitable little breed that can keep you entertained for hours with its clown-like personality!
Maltese
The Maltese dog is famous for its long, silky white coat. These dogs have a regal and elegant look, but once you get to know them, they’re actually playful and even silly dogs with an amazing sense of humor.
They’re also incredibly obedient and surprisingly athletic, making them excellent contenders in obedience and agility competitions. Maltese are also known for being calm and gentle creatures that are very well suited to life in an apartment.
French Bulldog
The French Bulldog is rapidly rising in the ranks of popularity and is a favorite breed, especially among celebrities. While they’re quite difficult to come by, due to being quite expensive, they’re well worth the money! They are adorably sweet, with a characteristically flat, wrinkly face.
Like its cousin the English Bulldog, a French Bulldog with an underbite can be exceptionally cute. French Bulldogs are affectionate and adaptable and are a favorite, particularly among city dwellers due to their low exercise needs.
Boxer
The Boxer is an energetic, large dog with a classic underbite and a sleek, powerful frame. Boxers are incredibly athletic and require an experienced owner who can meet their rigorous exercise needs.
While they have unfairly earned the reputation of being overly aggressive, a well-trained Boxer is actually wonderful with children, and fiercely protective of their family. This is an optimistic dog breed that is always on the go and has a playful streak that lasts well after puppyhood.
Pug
Pugs are one of the most popular breeds in America, and it’s no wonder! That classic flat face and those adorable, big eyes make Pugs irresistible. This is an ancient breed originating in China, where they were prized by royalty. This is a low-maintenance dog with low exercise needs.
They thrive in all sorts of living conditions, from sprawling country homes to big city apartments. The Pug is the perfect companion dog, always ready to cuddle with you on the couch after a long day of work!
Shih Tzu
For those who prefer small dog breeds with underbites, the Shih Tzu is an excellent option. These dogs were bred long ago by the ancient Chinese and were kept as the lapdogs of royalty. Today, they’ve retained their royal heritage in their regal bearing and elegant personality.
Don’t let their luxurious background fool you, though! Shih Tzus are actually incredibly playful and affectionate dogs with an outgoing personality that will thaw even the most aloof person!
Lhasa Apso
The Lhasa Apso may be tiny, but they were historically used as indoor watchdogs in Tibet. They have a distinctive sharp bark that will alert you to any intruders. They have long, beautiful coats and a sweet face. Their watchdog heritage can make them stubborn and aloof at times, but once you break through that serious exterior, you’ll find that the Lhasa Apso is actually warm, affectionate, and even playful.
Boston Terrier
The Boston Terrier originated as a cross between the English Bulldog and the English Terrier. Their adorably squashed face and batlike ears make for an instantly recognizable breed.
While they are incredibly playful and energetic, they are polite and calm while indoors. These are emotionally sensitive dogs that can pick up on their owner’s feelings amazingly well. They get along great with children, and make devoted companions in any family!
American Bulldog
Fans of big dogs that have underbites may want to consider an American Bulldog. This is especially true if they’d like a fiercely loyal protector. The American Bulldog definitely does not always have this toothy condition, however, it is always a serious working breed and loving family companion. Because it is a large and very powerful canine this true blue American dog breed is recommended for those with experience.
Pekingese
The Pekingese is a tiny dog with long fur that has a lot of character! Like many other breeds that originated in ancient China, they were bred to be the lapdogs of royalty. As a result, they have a distinctly regal personality.
They tend to bond very closely to one person, but can still get along well in a family. While they can be patient with children, their small body means they can’t handle much rough play. The Pekingese does best in a calm household.
Yorkshire Terrier
The Yorkshire Terrier is a feisty toy breed with a luxurious long coat, and erect ears. These dogs are known for being a bit bossy sometimes, probably because they know just how gorgeous they are. They work best for owners with good humor, as their mischievous nature can often get them into trouble. These dogs are especially popular in the city, but are adaptable enough to thrive just about anywhere.
Puggle
Similar to other dogs with an underbite, the Puggle is considered an extremely adorable kind of dog. This dog breed is a cross between a Pug and a Beagle. Because it is a crossbreed, not all Puggles have underbites.
If they do, they inherit the adorable trait from a Pug parent, but their jaws can sometimes resemble a Beagle more strongly. Puggles make great family pets, as they are affectionate companions and friendly towards everyone!
