While it may sound rare, there are actually a lot of dogs with different colored eyes. This is an odd but gorgeous condition that can occur in a variety of different breeds. So here are some of the top dog breeds with different colored eyes!
Heterochromia in Dogs
Heterochromia iridis is a genetic condition that results in dogs with two different colored eyes. This is caused by a lack of melanin in one eye, which makes it appear a different color from the other eye.
If a dog has two colors in one eye, this is caused by sectoral heterochromia or partial heterochromia. Not only does heterochromia look beautiful in dogs, but it also does not have any adverse effects on a dog’s health or vision!
Dalmatian
The Dalmatian is one of the most recognizable dog breeds in the world. The white coat of this dog is covered in beautiful black spots, and they are among one of the breeds known to sometimes have heterochromia. Dalmatians have also been used in the unique role of a “coach dog.”
In the past, their job was to accompany coaches, fire trucks, and various travelers as a guard dog. While we no longer use Dalmatians as coach dogs, they’ve found a new role as loyal companions.
Siberian Husky
Siberian Huskies without heterochromia are already known for their strikingly colored eyes, but a Husky with different colored eyes is even more beautiful! These stately dogs have been used for centuries to pull sleds in packs. They are well-suited to cold weather and have tireless energy.
Siberian Huskies require a large, fenced-in yard and lots of exercise. If you are an energetic and dedicated dog owner, then the Siberian Husky would make a wonderful pet for you!
Border Collie
The Border Collie is a medium-sized dog with pointed ears, a long muzzle, and a coat that can come in all sorts of colors and patterns. They have striking, almond-shaped eyes that can be heterochromatic, as well. Border Collies were bred to herd sheep, and as such, they are incredibly intelligent and easy to train. This is an athletic breed that needs lots of exercise, but they can also be very affectionate and cuddly.
Chihuahua
Chihuahuas are one of the few small dogs with different eye colors. These tiny dogs are the perfect companion for those who live in an apartment, although they certainly wouldn’t mind a nice big yard to run around in, either!
Chihuahuas can be difficult to train, but with proper socialization and obedience training, they make one of the cuddliest companions out there. Chihuahuas don’t require much exercise, but they’ll entertain you for hours with their playful, mischievous nature!
Great Dane
The Great Dane may look intimidating, but this giant dog breed is actually very patient and loving. They are very sweet with their owners, but make a formidable watchdog. You can sleep well at night knowing your Great Dane is keeping you and your family safe!
They also make wonderful family dogs that are great with children. Like all large dogs, however, Great Danes are a big responsibility, and require plenty of room to exercise.
Alaskan Malamute
The Alaskan Malamute is another of the dog breeds with heterochromia. These dogs may look similar to the Siberian Husky, but are larger and sturdier. Like the Siberian Husky, they require a lot of exercise and care, but with the proper enrichment, make loyal and fearless friends.
Once properly socialized as a puppy, Alaskan Malamutes can become the perfect family dog. While they’re known to work hard, they love to play hard, too!
Australian Shepherd
Australian Shepherds are longhaired dogs that have different colored eyes in some cases. As their name suggests, they were bred as herding dogs, and are both intelligent and obedient as a result. They have a strong work drive and can be trained to do a variety of impressive tasks.
Many dog lovers can’t get enough of the Australian Shepherd’s beautiful coat, which comes in many different possible colors and patterns, including spotted and merle.
Australian Cattle Dog
The Australian Cattle Dog is a curious, medium-sized dog that was also bred to herd. These are a favorite among athletic dog owners, and their endless energy means they can even go on long runs! If the Australian Cattle Dog does not feel challenged, it can become restless and get into all sorts of trouble. It is also one of the dog breeds with two different colored eyes, making it an especially unique companion.
Alaskan Klee Kai
The Alaskan Klee Kai is a newer dog breed that strongly resembles a Siberian Husky, but is a bit smaller. This is the perfect dog breed for anyone who loves the look of a Husky, but prefers a dog more suited to companionship than hard work. Alaskan Klee Kais still need lots of exercise, however, and can be both loud and wary of strangers if improperly trained and socialized. This dog is not for beginners!
Catahoula Leopard Dog
Just like its name suggests, the Catahoula Leopard Dog is covered in gorgeous spots and patches. Their coat can come in a variety of colors, setting them apart from the black and white Dalmatian. This is a fierce and independent American breed that will readily assert itself in the face of danger.
While they make incredibly loyal watchdogs, they can be aggressive and domineering if they aren’t properly trained. These dogs require an experienced owner who isn’t afraid of showing who’s boss!
American Bulldog
The last of the dogs with different colored eyes on our list is the American Bulldog. These sturdy, medium-sized to large dogs may look a bit scary, but they can be real softies on the inside! American Bulldogs are courageous and fiercely loyal. While they are known to be a bit independent at times, they will gladly risk their lives to protect their family. American Bulldogs require an experienced dog owner.
