Hairless Dog Breeds

Usually, when we think of dogs, we think of furry creatures on four legs. But did you know that there are hairless canines as well? These unique dogs are a favorite among owners who need a hypoallergenic pet, or those who don’t want to deal with fleas or shedding. That being said, here are the hairless dog breeds and what you’ll want to know about each of them.

American Hairless Terrier

The American Hairless Terrier is one of the small hairless dog breeds. And it’s actually not always hairless there is also a coated variety of this American breed that has a smooth short coat.

In contrast, the hairless variety is born with a downy birth coat that falls out after several weeks, although some dogs may still have eyebrows and whiskers. This is a protective and affectionate breed with a lot of energy, and unlike most other hairless dogs it has a full set of normal teeth.

Xoloitzcuintli

This hairless Mexican dog breed is over 3,000 years old and descended from the dogs of the ancient Aztecs. They were revered as sacred and were often buried alongside their masters. Their skin is dark, ranging from black to bronze, and their body compact but elegant.

This breed is small, but they pack a lot of personality. And while they can be devoted watchdogs they also have a calm and affectionate demeanor. It’s important to keep in mind, however, that like all hairless dogs Xolo’s are prone to sunburn as well as overexposure to the cold.

Chinese Crested Dog

The Chinese Crested Dog is not totally hairless, as they have long tufts of fur on their ears, face, paws, and tail. The rest of their body is completely hairless, however, giving them a very distinct look. This is a tiny breed with large, dark, and expressive eyes.

While they were originally loved for their ability to catch rats aboard ships, Chinese Crested Dogs also make great family companions. They are also incredibly playful and spirited creatures. There is also a full-coated variety of this breed known as the “powderpuff”.

Peruvian Inca Orchid

The Peruvian Inca Orchid, also called the Peruvian Hairless Dog, comes in three sizes: Small, medium, and large. No matter their size, however, every Peruvian Inca Orchid is incredibly devoted and affectionate. These dogs love to work and make wonderful hunting companions. They can also be trained in agility and rally courses.

These dogs make excellent guardians, as they are often wary of strangers. While they can get along with small children, because of their prey drive they usually do not make great companions if you already have other small pets.

Ecuadorian Hairless Dog

This South American hairless dog descended from the Peruvian Inca Orchid and is not yet considered distinct enough from their ancestors to be counted as a separate breed. However, they are known for their extreme rarity and surprisingly long legs.

Similar to other hairless breeds this one is often missing its premolar teeth, as the gene responsible for its lack of hair is also involved in tooth development. The breed used to be more plentiful but was nearly wiped out during the Spanish period. Today, it is considered the rarest of all hairless canines.

Jonangi

The Jonangi, like all hairless dog breeds, requires extra care to stay healthy. Their hairless coat might not require brushing, but it can leave them exposed to both the cold and sunburn. Jonangi are an Indian dog breed known for their agility and ability to cover large distances.

They make excellent farm workers, particularly by guarding livestock. While they can be difficult to socialize, with proper training, the Jonangi can become great with children.
