How Much Exercise Does An Akita Need

If you love your Akita Inu, you’ll make sure it gets enough exercise to stay fit and healthy. But how much exercise does an Akita need? Read on to find out.

Akita Exercise Basics

In general, this breed needs a moderate amount of exercise on a regular basis. Ideally, an adult Akita should be given at least a thirty to forty-five-minute exercise session twice per day. This could mean a fast-paced walk, jog, or play session that gets your dog moving and exerting itself. Just how intense an exercise session should be will depend on your dog’s age and overall health.

For example, like all growing canines, Akita puppies shouldn’t be exercised so much that they are putting too much stress on growing muscles, bones, and joints. Senior pets too are also best off with less intense exercise to help prevent injuries. If your pet is just starting out with regular exercise, you’ll want to build up slowly.

And if your Akita dog has any pre-existing medical conditions you’ll want to take this into consideration as well. Consulting your dog’s veterinarian before starting a daily exercise program is always recommended.

Akita Exercise Tips

With the Akita, dominance, and territoriality towards other animals can be an issue. These are traits that are naturally inherent in the breed. It’s just one of the Akita facts, that owners will need to deal with. Luckily exercise can help to burn off extra energy and also keep your pet in a calm state.

However, because of these behavioral traits, it is very important that when playing with your dog outdoors, you do so in a securely fenced-in area. When walking or jogging, your Akita should also always be on a leash. And puppies will need to be socialized well. This will help to help make sure they become balanced adults and will be better behaved if they meet other pets and people when out exercising with their owner.

With the right amount of exercise, Akita dogs can stay healthy, and strong, and provide their owners with love and companionship for many years to come.
