When looking to adopt a dog, you might be overwhelmed by all of the choices. After all, there are hundreds of different breeds to choose one, and each is just as adorable as the next! Not only do dogs come in a variety of colors, shapes, and sizes, but each dog also has a rich history. There are tons of dogs that originate from different countries, and some have existed for centuries! Today, we’re going to look at Hungarian dog breeds, which are often praised for their hardworking and tenacious personalities.
Hungarian Greyhound
The Hungarian Greyhound is an incredibly active and intelligent dog breed. However, they can be difficult to train. They are a reserved breed that can take some time to win over. While they make excellent guard dogs, their wary instincts can sometimes lead to aggression and biting. If properly trained, the Hungarian Greyhound makes a devoted and resilient pet.
Vizsla
The Hungarian Vizsla was primarily bred as a hunting and searching dog. Their keen nose and tireless energy mean this dog is perfect for any hunting expedition. Their intelligent nature means they are also quite easy to train.
However, they are also loving companions who get along well with children, as well as any other family member. This dog has a naturally friendly demeanor, and they will try to become friends with just about anyone!
Wirehaired Vizsla
The Wirehaired Vizsla is yet another Hungarian hunting dog. This is an extremely active breed that requires lots of exercise. A big yard and daily walks or runs are a must for this dog breed. The Wirehaired Vizsla was developed in the early 1900s when long-haired Hungarian Vizslas were bred with German wirehaired pointers. The result was this beautiful and strong-boned dog with an instinct for hunting.
Kuvasz
The Kuvasz is one of those rare dogs that look like polar bears. Their large bodies and thick, fluffy white coat is almost identical to those Arctic creatures. The Kuvasz is one of the oldest Hungarian dog breeds. They were bred to herd sheep and other flocks of animals, and they are also devoted guard dogs.
Despite this dog’s sweet and loving nature, however, this breed is so rare that it is in danger of extinction. Could you be the right owner to help bring this breed back into popularity?
Transylvanian Hound
The Transylvanian Hound is one of the most regal Hungarian hound dogs. Their recognizable black and tan coat, as well as their lean and muscular bodies, make them one of the most gorgeous dogs on this list. They are well suited to hunting in difficult terrain, but they also love curling up on the couch with the family. While they are ruthless hunters, they are also loving companions that are well suited to life with children.
Komondor
The Komondor is one of the only Hungarian dogs with dreadlocks. Their long, coiled fur makes them one of the most instantly recognizable breeds. They are also an incredibly popular herding dog. While this breed is unfortunately difficult to train, they are family-oriented dogs that will tirelessly guard their owners day and night.
Puli
Puli are one of the other Hungarian sheepdogs, and like the Komondor, they have an iconic coat of corded fur. They are always full of energy, meaning they will need an active family to keep up with their activity. They are also incredibly acrobatic, making them well suited to agility competitions.
Pumi
The Pumi is a medium-sized Hungarian sheepdog with short, fluffy fur and perky ears. Pumis are quick learners who love nothing more than to impress their owners with their hard work. This is a loving and cuddly dog breed, but they are also fearless and active when it’s time to work. They love being the center of attention, and will endlessly entertain their owners with crazy antics.
Mudi
The Mudi is one of the bravest Hungarian dog breeds. Their coat can come in a variety of colors and patterns, although they are best recognized for their merle coat. This is an especially courageous dog breed that has been used as a rescue dog in both the United States and Finland.
