Not everyone wants a high-energy pet. Many potential owners would actually prefer to have a dog that has a lot less energy. So here are some of the top lazy dog breeds you’ll want to consider that work well with a more laid-back lifestyle.
Chow Chow
The Chow Chow is an ancient Chinese breed. It has a thick fluffy coat and face which makes it look similar to a teddy bear. It’s also one of the few dogs that have a blue-black tongue. The Chow Chow prefers short exercise or play sessions followed by some rest. While it does have a lower energy level than many other breeds it is a dog that requires an experienced owner.
Pug
The Pug is one of the small lazy dog breeds which make it an ideal pet for small homes and apartments. And also of course for those who don’t want to have to go on long daily walks or runs. The Pug prefers to burn off its energy in daily play rather than exercise sessions. However, the breed does tend to get overweight so be sure to schedule a time to play each and every day.
Bullmastiff
The Bullmastiff is a big and very formidable breed. It is known for being lazy around the house and sometimes a bit stubborn as well. However, that being said, the Bullmastiff is a top-notch natural guard dog that is always ready to protect its family from any threat. Because the Bullmastiff has large jowls this dog does tend to drool.
Shih Tzu
The Shih Tzu is a popular small companion dog with a long flowing coat. And it usually only has very short bursts of energy where it wants to play or maybe go for a short walk. The majority of the time, however, its preferred activities include lounging around and snuggling with its owner.
The Shih Tzu is also one of the lazy hypoallergenic dog breeds so it can be a great choice for allergy sufferers who want a small low-energy pooch.
Whippet
The Whippet is one of the fastest dogs on the planet. However, like its larger relative, the Greyhound, it is a sprinter. It doesn’t have endless energy like many people would expect. The Whippet does need about an hour of physical activity per day. But when it gets that, the rest of this laidback dog’s day is usually spent snoozing comfortably on the sofa.
English Bulldog
The English Bulldog is without a doubt one of the laziest dog breeds of all. This is an easy-going, child-friendly, and wrinkly canine that is well-known for its lethargic nature. A short daily walk of about fifteen to twenty minutes is just about all it needs to keep it happy and healthy. But be sure to take it easy, especially in hot weather, since the English Bulldog does overheat easily.
Pekingese
The Pekingese is a fluffy lap dog that was developed in China. In fact, is considered to be amongst the world’s most ancient breeds. This little guy can also be stubborn and quite unenthusiastic when it comes time for daily exercise. However, if he doesn’t get it, the Pekingese is prone to becoming obese and sluggish, so quick walks and short play sessions are a must.
Cavalier King Charles Spaniel
Elegant and gentle, the Cavalier King Charles Spaniel is a low-energy pooch that loves to cuddle. It’s one of the lazy affectionate dog breeds and will therefore get along with both people and other dogs.
In fact, despite being so small, the Cavalier King Charles Spaniel is not shy about making friends with dogs that are much larger in size. This sweet-tempered canine is an ideal choice for families with young kids, the elderly, and homes with multiple dogs.
Great Dane
The Great Dane is a huge canine however it’s also a giant couch potato. A Dane can be energetic when it’s time for its daily walk, run, or play session. However other than that, it is usually very laidback. It’s actually critical that owners are careful not to give their Great Dane too much exercise. This is particularly important with young dogs because their growing bones and joints can be damaged.
French Bulldog
The French Bulldog is one of the best lazy dog breeds for people who love the look of bully-type dogs but want something in a small and low-maintenance package. It is an easygoing dog that’s quiet in the house and is great with kids. Because of its small size and laidback attitude, the Frenchie is perfectly well-suited for apartment life.
