Polish Dog Breeds

Located in Central Europe, the Republic of Poland is a country of stunning beauty with a range of natural habitats. And it’s also home to several remarkable breeds of dogs that were developed for specific jobs. So here are the Polish dog breeds and what you’ll want to know about each of them.

Polish Tatra Sheepdog

The Polish Tatra Sheepdog was created to both guard and herd flocks of livestock in the Tatra Mountains of southern Poland. The Tatras are the highest mountain range in the Carpathian Mountains. These big Polish dogs have an all-white coat and today are mainly used as guard dogs and companions.

However, because they were developed to think for themselves and to be territorial they are not suited for inexperienced owners. As a working dog, the Polish Tatra Sheepdog thrives when it is given a job to do.

Polish Hound

The Polish Hound is also known as the Ogar Polski. It is a medium-sized canine with a muscular build, powerful bone structure, and impressive stamina when working in the field. The breed has a long history in Poland and references to it can be found in historical Polish literature, and images of it can be seen in paintings, coats of arms, and engravings.

The noble Polish hound was very popular with the country’s ruling class. While it is a hunting scenthound, this breed is also a superb family dog as well.

Polish Greyhound

Unlike other dog breeds from Poland, the Polish Greyhound is a sighthound. It is built for speed so that it can run down and catch game animals (as opposed to tracking them by their scent). This incredibly fast canine has been used to hunt game such as bustard, roe deer, hare, fox, and wolf.

The Polish Greyhound is more muscular and stronger than many other sighthound breeds. In its native homeland of Poland, this fleet-footed and spirited hunter is known as the Chart Polski.

Polish Hunting Dog

This Polish scenthound is used to hunt animals that range in size from small to large, including both deer and the ferocious wild boar. The breed is known for its endurance and ability to hunt in both difficult terrains and also extreme weather conditions.

It is an obedient canine that is easy to train. And unlike most scenthounds and hunting dog breeds in general, in addition to its skills in the field, the Polish Hunting Dog also makes a top-notch guard dog.

Polish Lowland Sheepdog

This is a medium-sized dog with a muscular build. It has a thick, long, and heavy coat. Like other Polish dog breeds, the Polish Lowland Sheepdog has a working background (it’s a sheepherding dog). However nowadays in Poland because of its friendly temperament, it is also a popular companion.

And it is one that can do well in urban settings and smaller living spaces such as apartments, as long as it gets daily exercise. It is also known as the Valée Sheepdog and Polski Owzarek Nizinny or sometimes called the PON short. This breed is believed by many to be one of the ancestors of the Border Collie.
