The Prague Ratter Has A Royal History

The Prague Ratter, also known as the Prazsky Krysarik in the Czech Republic, was first developed during the Middle Ages, They had the important job of helping to keep castles clear of rats and other vermin. The king of Poland, King Boleslav II, was quite impressed by the breed, and personally owned two of these little dogs. Sadly, later on, when the Miniature Pinscher was introduced, the Prague Ratter fell out of fashion and is now quite rare outside of the Czech Republic.

They Have A Distinctive Coloration

The Prague Ratter is a small black and tan breed. Their body is mostly black (or sometimes a lighter brown), with tan coloration above the dog’s eyes, on its cheeks and chest, legs, and beneath the base of the tail. It is also possible for the Prague Ratter to have red or blue merle coloration, resulting in a beautiful mottled coat.

The Prague Ratter Is One Of The Smallest Dog Breeds In The World!

One of the most interesting facts about Prague Ratters is that they are one of the smallest dog breeds in the world. When it comes to height, few dog breeds are shorter than the Prague Ratter, who stands at just 7 to 9 inches tall. When it comes to weight, this toy dog is also quite tiny, typically weighing only 3 to 7 pounds on average.

They Make Loving Family Companions

The Prague Ratter may have initially used for their vermin hunting skills but they are also known for their playful and affectionate nature. They love to curl up on the couch with their humans, and can also entertain you with their spunky attitude and love of play. So it’s no surprise they make excellent companions. The Prague Ratter is also highly intelligent and easy to train.

Prague Ratters Need to Be Treated Gently

As mentioned earlier, the Prague Ratter is one of the smallest dog breeds in the world. Even though they can get along with children and other dogs quite well, they need to be treated quite carefully. Your Prague Ratter can easily become intimidated by rowdy children or large dogs at the dog park.

They’re Surprisingly Quiet

Another fun fact about Prague Ratter dogs is that they’re surprisingly quiet. Many other small dog breeds like Chihuahuas or Yorkshire Terriers are known for being quite yappy. The Prague Ratter, however, is quiet by nature, making them a popular choice for small dog lovers who don’t want to deal with a lot of noise.

The Prague Ratter Is Excellent At Catching Vermin

Just like its name suggests, the Prague Ratter is one of the ratter dog breeds. They were initially bred in the Middle Ages to keep castles clear of rats, mice, and other vermin. Even today, their small size, quiet nature, and excellent hunting skills mean they are still very popular as ratters in the Czech Republic.

This Breed Makes The Perfect Apartment Dog

While daily walks are still important for the Prague Ratter, this breed is perfectly suited to life in an apartment. They don’t need a wide-open space to run around in and are perfectly content to play in a living room instead. Their small size also means they won’t get in the way even when space is limited. And the fact that they are a quiet breed also is a big plus when it comes to apartment living and one which neighbors will be sure to appreciate.

The Prague Ratter Is Spunky But Easy To Train

The Prague Ratter is known for having a silly attitude, but they have good humor and are highly intelligent. This means that they are easy to train, and unlike many other breeds don’t typically have issues when it comes to house training. However, it’s important to socialize this breed at a young age to prevent them from developing “Small Dog Syndrome.”

They’re Strong In A Number Of  Different Skills

One of the coolest Prague Ratter facts is that their skills extend much further than their ratting ability. Their energetic nature and intelligence make them incredibly easy to train for agility courses, obedience training, and a number of other competitive skills.
