There are many reasons to own a small dog and there is a wide range of amazing breeds to choose from. Many people find the ones with big ears to be particularly adorable. So here are some of the top small dogs with big ears to help you find the canine you’re looking for.
Cocker Spaniel
Smart, easy to train, gentle, and energetic are all ways to describe the Cocker Spaniel’s personality. This gundog is also visually appealing as well with its large floppy ears and wavy coat. There are two recognized types of Cocker Spaniel: the American Cocker Spaniel and the English Cocker Spaniel.
Dachshund
The short legs, long body, and large ears of the Dachshund make it an easily recognizable breed. However don’t be fooled by its small appearance, this hotdog-like pooch is actually an athletic hunting dog. Dachshund actually means “badger hunter,” in German since this was the job it was originally created for.
Papillon
The Papillon is a small dog with big ears and long hair. It is a toy breed with a fine and silky coat that requires combing and brushing several times a week to keep it from becoming matted. While it is fond of children, it’s also quite fragile so it shouldn’t be kept in homes with very young kids since they most likely will be too rough when it comes to handling and playing with pets.
Cavalier King Charles Spaniel
Cavalier King Charles Spaniels are elegant-looking lap dogs that have graced the laps of many royals throughout history. They are tiny dogs with big ears and large round eyes which are a breed hallmark. These friendly canines are highly attached to their owners and are therefore ideal for people who are home most of the time or bring their pooch with them everywhere they go.
Beagle
The Beagle is a hunting dog created specifically to hunt rabbits. And like many other hunting hounds its big ears help to funnel scent to its nose. Because they were created to be social pack hunters Beagles do get along well with other canines and make excellent family pets. Although when on a scent they are known to ignore commands so for safety always be sure to keep your Beagle on a leash.
Chihuahua
The Chihuahua is a tiny pooch from Mexico that is popular around the world. This companion breed becomes very attached to its owners. Many Chihuahuas are so protective of their loved ones that they may snap at strangers. Therefore early training and consistent rules are important just like with much larger dogs.
Miniature Pinscher
This big-eared small dog may look like it is a miniature version of the Doberman Pinscher but it’s an entirely different breed. The Miniature Pinscher was created to be a ratter not a guard dog like the Doberman. While some Min Pins may have ears that stand up on their own, cropping is typically used to create the erect ears most often seen in this breed.
Basenji
Basenjis are a primitive African breed that was once used for hunting. They have almond-shaped eyes, big pointy ears, and a curled tail that is carried high. While this high-energy dog can be stubborn, with an experienced owner and a lot of positive reinforcement, the Basenji can make a great pet.
Toy And Miniature Poodle
The Poodle comes in three sizes: standard, miniature, and toy. They all have big floppy ears and a dense curly coat. All three sizes are the same breed with the same general history. However, only the Miniature Poodle and Toy Poodle are considered mall dogs, with the Toy Poodle being the smaller of the two.
French Bulldog
French Bulldogs are small dogs with big ears. And their ears are their most distinguishing physical characteristic. They’re often referred to as “bat ears,” because they are large and upright similar to that of a bat. The compact size and laidback nature of the French Bulldog make it a perfect choice for those who love bully breeds but have limited space.
