The Thai Bangkaew Dog is a beautiful, spitz-type dog with long, dense fur and a gorgeous flowing tail. These dogs are incredibly loyal, but are known to be dominant and quite difficult to train. Read on to find out more amazing Thai Bangkaew facts and information!
The Thai Bangkaew Is Not for Beginners!
The Thai Bangkaew Dog needs an owner with previous experience as a dog owner. These dogs are stubborn and can be quite difficult to train. While they are loyal and loving towards their owners, this breed has a need to be in charge, and will constantly challenge their owner’s authority.
The Breed Was Developed About 100 Years Ago
While we don’t know for sure how the Thai Bangkaew Dog came to be, one legend tells of a monk in the Bangkaew temple who had a reputation for being good with animals. A nearby villager had a pregnant dog and gave the dog to the monk, hoping he could care for her.
However, the monk could not think of any local male dogs that could get the female pregnant, and so believed that the dog may have mated with a wild animal of a different species.
The Thai Bangkaew Dog Is Part Golden Jackal
One of the most interesting facts about Thai Bangkaew Dogs is that the supposedly crazy legend about the female dog mating with another species is actually true! More recently, breeders took a DNA test of several Thai Bangkaew Dogs to try and find out more about their lineage. They were shocked to discover that they had some DNA related to Golden Jackals, a wolf-like canine native to parts of Asia.
Their Coat Comes in Many Colors
The Thai Bangkaew Dog has a base color of white, but their coat can come with many other colors. These dogs can be pure white, tan and white, black and white, gray and white, red and white, and cream and white!
The Thai Bangkaew Dog Is Very Rare
In its home country of Thailand, the Bangkaew is not a common sight. And outside of Thailand, the Thai Bangkaew Dog is incredibly rare. These gorgeous yet stubborn dogs are unfortunately difficult to get ahold of, however, they are worth the effort!
They Make Great Guard Dogs
Another fun fact about Thai Bangkaew Dogs is that they make excellent guard dogs. These dogs are naturally suspicious of any strange humans or dogs. While this does mean they need lots of early socialization, and can become aggressive in public, it also makes them the perfect breed for defending the home.
Even though these dogs can be stubborn and domineering at times, their fierce loyalty to their owners means that they will always put your life and safety first!
Thai Bangkaew Dogs Have Thick Fur
The Thai Bangkaew Dog has a rough, medium-length outer coat that is water-resistant, as well as a thick, soft undercoat. Their dense coat does shed quite a bit, and these dogs also require regular grooming. To prevent excess shedding, you should brush a Thai Bangkaew Dog about three times a week.
They Need Regular Exercise
Thai Bangkaew Dogs are medium-sized and very athletic. They love to run around and chase things, and they also have a high prey drive. This energetic dog can be prone to destruction and even aggression if their exercise needs aren’t met, so a large yard to run around in, as well as daily walks and runs, are a necessity for this breed.
Thai Bangkaew Dogs Need to Be Carefully Introduced to Children
While the Thai Bangkaew Dog’s natural wariness towards strangers means they make great guard dogs, this, combined with their boisterous playing style can make them a bit too aggressive for children. They need to be socialized with all members of the household from puppyhood, and do best in families with older, gentler children.
They’re Very Healthy
The last of our Thai Bangkaew Dog facts is that this is a naturally healthy dog breed. While they can be susceptible to some eye problems or hip dysplasia, in general, they are considered a very healthy breed.
Many other dog breeds suffer from inbreeding, bracycephelia, and other health problems that can make them difficult to care for. With a proper diet and regular amounts of exercise, however, the Thai Bangkaew Dog can be expected to live a long and healthy life.
