Thai Dog Breeds

Like many other countries around the world, the Southeast Asian country of Thailand can be credited with developing its own very own dog breeds. And while there are only two, both are incredibly unique with a look and temperament all their own. So here are both of the Thai dog breeds and what you’ll want to know about them.

Thai Ridgeback

Even though this dog has been around since the Middle Ages, this ancient breed has only recently been recognized formally. The Thai Ridgeback dog is a medium-sized canine that is very muscular, making it an agile athlete. In fact, it is known for both its incredible jumping and climbing abilities.

These natural skills have led to it having the reputation of being quite an escape artist, even from yards that may seem to be securely fenced or walled-in. Like other ridgeback breeds, such as the Rhodesian Ridgeback, this dog earned its name from the hair along its spine, which grows in the opposite direction from the rest of its coat.

This gives it the appearance of having a ridge on its back. The Thai Ridgeback breed was originally used as both a hunting dog and a guard dog. And while it is more than happy to engage in a hard day’s work, nowadays most people choose them for their loyalty and companionship. While the Thai Ridgeback has a bit of an independent streak, they make incredibly faithful friends.

They also get along well with children, making them excellent family-oriented dogs. However because they do have a high prey drive, are protective, and are independent in nature, these Thai dogs do need an owner with experience who can give them consistent training.

Thai Bangkaew Dog

The other dog breed from Thailand is the Thai Bangkaew. Like the Thai Ridgeback, this dog has an instinct for both hunting and guarding. They are naturally wary of strangers and will not hesitate to bark or even defend their property or owner if needed. However, they also can make loving and faithful companions.

The Thai Bangkaew dog has a fluffy coat and gorgeous plumed tail. They require regular brushing and exercise but are relatively low maintenance outside of that. That being said this dog is definitely not for first-time owners. Without proper training and socialization, the Bangkaew can become dominant and destructive.

And because this is also an intelligent breed it can be stubborn, which can make training difficult if you aren’t patient and experienced. With a firm hand and self-restraint, however, the Thai Bangkaew can be trained to be a devoted and obedient pet that will remain by your side through thick and thin.

While they work well in families with older children, they are not generally well-suited to homes with younger kids. If you have what it takes to temper this stubborn but loyal Thai dog breed, then the rewards of owning a Bangkaew can be well worth the effort.
